Presenter Details Karl Gilligan is one of the foremost experts in the field of Strength and Conditioning coaching and education. He is known internationally as the founder and CEO of EPI as well as in-demand speaker at Strength and Conditioning conferences. He graduated with a BSc in Sport Science and an MSc in Strength & Conditioning from St Mary's University, London. He is also a member of the NSCA CSCS.
In 2003, he began working as a full-time Strength & Conditioning Coach with the IRFU and Leinster Rugby. In 2007, the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS), now Sport Ireland, was created and after 4 years with the IRFU he began working with Olympic sports. He was appointed Sport Science manager with the Irish Canoe Union, with a primary responsibility to working with 3-time Olympian Eoin Rheinisch in kayaking whom he worked with at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games. More recently, he was appointed Head of Strength & Conditioning with World Rugby in 2021 in preparation for the 2023 World Cup in France. 
 
In 2012, he created the National Certificate in Strength & Conditioning (NCSC) course and with the rapid expansion of the course internationally his focus primarily moved from coaching to education. Since then, he has delivered more than 350 education courses in more than 10 countries worldwide with more than 4, 500 participants certified.

The Phase 1 S&C course is an introductory-level course and is the first phase of the National Certificate in Strength & Conditioning (NCSC) qualification. On this 3 day course, participants will learn the fundamental principles of Strength & Conditioning in preparation for working with individual athletes, players and team sports. It is the starting point for anyone seeking to upskill in Strength & Conditioning or understand how to apply the principles of Strength & Conditioning for injury prevention and/or rehabilitation strategies.

Phase 1 will teach you how to deliver your Strength & Conditioning coaching following a systematic evidence based approach. By the end of the course, participants will learn how to implement and apply various methods of training to enhance athletic performance and prevent injury.
