Geriatric Oncology Study Day - HSCP Funded

Venue: Mercer's Institute for Successful Ageing, St James's Hospital

Dates: November 2026 (TBC)

Format: 1 day, in-person

Cost: €20

EOI to open: September 2026

Participant allocation:

This is a multidisciplinary event organised by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP). The course has been funded by the HSCP Office, HSE.

As such, places are available to physiotherapists in the publicly funded healthcare service only.

Background:

Older adults account for a significant proportion of cancer diagnoses, yet structured CPD opportunities in geriatric oncology for HSCPs remain limited. National policy increasingly emphasises the need to integrate geriatric assessment into oncology pathways, highlighting the importance of understanding frailty, functional status, cognition and comorbidities when planning cancer treatment for older adults.

This interdisciplinary study day addresses this gap by bringing together eight health and social care professions to develop shared understanding, language and practical skills in geriatric oncology. The programme will equip HSCPs with applied skills in CGAinformed assessment, communication and targeted interventions to support personcentred decisionmaking. By focusing on functional age rather than chronological age, the course supports improved treatment tolerance, quality of life and care coordination. The study day aligns with evolving national priorities for integrated cancer care, workforce capability building and the provision of appropriate, sustainable care for older adults.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the rationale for a geriatric oncology approach and the epidemiology of cancer in older adults.

  • Apply components of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) to oncology decisionmaking, including frailty, cognition, mood, multimorbidity, medications, nutrition and social context.

  • Communicate complex diagnoses and treatment plans effectively with older adults and their carers.

  • Identify and implement targeted HSCPled interventions to maintain mobility, cognitive function and selfcare ability.

  • Recognise how tailored, CGAinformed interventions can reduce complications and readmissions and improve quality of life and outcomes for older adults with cancer.

Important Information:

HSCP-funded CPD opportunities are available to all HSE-funded Health and Social Care Professionals, regardless of professional body membership. Offers are subject to caseload and service needs.
