Background:

Clinical supervision is widely recognised as a crucial component of safe, ethical, and effective practice in health and social care. It provides a structured platform for practitioners to engage in reflective practice, enhance professional skills, and ensure their work aligns with ethical standards while remaining responsive to their clients’ needs. Effective supervision supports professional growth, promotes reflective practice, and fosters accountability within complex operational environments. Additionally, it benefits practitioners’ well-being and improves service quality by offering a dedicated space for professional dialogue, reflection, and support.

This course introduces participants to the fundamental principles, processes, and practical applications of clinical supervision in professional practice. Participants will examine the role of supervision in fostering reflective practice, upholding professional standards, and enhancing professional accountability. Principal topics encompass supervision models, the supervisory relationship, ethical and legal obligations, confidentiality, and data protection considerations.

The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. Through discussions, case studies, reflective exercises, and role-playing activities, participants will develop practical skills that support effective engagement in supervision as part of their ongoing professional development. The programme is designed for professionals working in health and social care settings who participate in supervision as supervisees or wish to enhance their skills in providing clinical supervision within their area of practice.

Further details about this course are available on the Social Care Ireland website.

Mode of Delivery

The course will be delivered through a blended online learning format that combines live interactive online sessions, structured supervision practice, and guided independent learning. This approach is designed to support both the development of theoretical understanding and the acquisition of practical supervision skills. It is delivered over 12 weeks (3 hours per week). In addition, participants will engage in four one-hour group supervision sessions designed to support reflective learning and the application of course concepts to professional practice. All elements of the course are delivered online, ensuring that the programme is fully accessible to participants regardless of geographical location.
